Thoughts about this month’s income report:

It’s a decent report, but really things were still stagnating at this point. My income was pretty flat.

Did I Meet my Goals for July?

I don’t think I had goals for July other than to publish more posts.

Goals for August:

Again I did not have goals for August other than to keep floating since it was summer.

However, it’s important to note that I did quit my job as a writer for Verywell in the summer of 2023. At that time I was only making $1125 per month with them, which technically was good for the amount of work I was doing.

However, the straw that broke the camel’s back was when I discovered they had fired one of my colleagues, then used all her articles about autism and put them into a magazine that they were selling on newstands. I found out as I was waiting in line at Sobeys!

It was at that time I knew that I could no longer contribute articles to their website. When I first started with them (back when it was About.com) they were offering compensation per thousand page views. When IAC Interactive took over, they changed it so that the writers (who had built that site) were now only being given flat fees.

My suspicion is that the writers they are hiring today are not making nearly as much as the ones who were there from the beginning like me.

All in all, I know it’s a business and they will do what’s best for the business. But for me, I couldn’t stomach it anymore. A lot of people left a lot longer ago than me, but I’d finally had enough.

The lesson I learned? Don’t put your hard work into something you don’t own, especially if it involves your creative efforts. I liken it to an actor or actress being paid peanuts for a movie (like Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing) and then struggling to make ends meet as the people who made the movie roll in the dough.

Never again will I trade my creative work for money unless I own the business!
